Second home ((Open!))
Schreber has been puttering for about a week, pinpointing back and forth from home and setting up his lab again. It's been pretty much empty since his heart attack and that was a while ago. He's visited once or twice to show Sarah around but now he's moving things in and setting up his room again. There's another beat up couch (Not the same one, that's at the beach house), and his lockbox with the brainjuice samples, and the computer is up and running. There's also a box with a lamp that's supposed to simulate real sunlight and a little wire rack like you're supposed to put in a patio for flowerpots. Schreber is still puttering because he's not really sure where to get started but the door is open (that makes him a little jumpy) and there's a sign taped to the door with his name on it again. The old one got swept away in the flood.
Orwell is on the arm of the new couch, pulling at threads and watching the door anxiously for visitors but the lab seems very quiet these days.
Current Mood: busy

Dr. Crane is a dangerous friend to have but there's also a lot there to respect and admire. Not everyone can see it, especially when he's feargassing them.
"I tried to make it as impersonal as possible, but she doesn't have the other ex...perience to compare it to." He smiles weakly. "It does have practical applications but not many people would be willing. I'd... do that to myself without much hesitation, but that's different."
Sarah Branigan: purple rosesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 04:48 pm (UTC)
Involuntary feargassing can put quite a damper on potential feelings of respect and admiration.

"I suppose not," she murmurs. It also seems somewhat dishonest to spread information in such a way -- maybe it's best only for emergencies.

She returns to the table with lunch spread atop it and helps herself to some pasta salad. "I think... so long as I weren't awake, the actual method isn't so bad. It's quick, at least."
dr_schreber: contemplative syringedr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 04:56 pm (UTC)
People are funny like that.
Schreber thinks that injecting people's brains should bother him more then it does. He opens a little black case and checks the empty syringes there to make sure they're okay. They get sterilized and reused and he worries about cracks in the glass. "Experimentation always seems to be the exception to that. You have to ex...periment with things first so you can be sure it will actually work in an e...mergency situation."
Sarah Branigan: prettysarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 05:02 pm (UTC)
Sarah thinks it really ought to bother her more, too, the idea of being injected. But now that the Strangers have been taken out of the equation, and the technology could be used for something good, it doesn't seem troubling. A lot of medicine is like that -- most techniques have the potential for benefiting others (or being horribly misused).

She smiles faintly, picking at her lunch. "Maybe. You know that I'm willing to help you."

Schreber injecting her with his syringe has all kinds of implications too. Probably he does not think about that and all the silly innuendo that goes along with it. ;P Medicine isn't a field for the squeamish though so it makes sense that she deals with the idea okay.
"...You don't want to be an experimental subject." He remembers to put his work down and eat something.
Sarah Branigan: oh pleasesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 05:23 pm (UTC)
There is no way in Hell Sarah would ever associate that with that, so any such innuendo is lost on her although she really does like him dressed in his labcoat.

She reaches over and gives him arm a squeeze. "I don't want to have you test everything on me, no, but if it's something I can use anyway..." she shrugs. "Besides, I already promised you a silly dream of mine."
dr_schreber: tired/blank lookdr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 05:30 pm (UTC)
Schreber's labcoat is hanging in the back of the closet at the beach house. Maybe she should get it cleaned and pressed to give him a hint. Mostly he works in his normal clothes, now.
"I wouldn't... I couldn't..." He watches her a little worried. "I don't like to think of using you like a laborator...y animal. But..." He laughs nervously. "Why, have you had any silly dreams recently?"
Sarah Branigan: purple rosesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 05:38 pm (UTC)
Sarah will get the labcoat clean and pressed and bring it to his lab. Strictly for the good of *science!*.

She shakes her head. "You wouldn't be using me, not if I'm volunteering." Maybe if he injects her with her permission, he'll lose a little bit of his guilt. "But... it's up to you."

His question makes her blush a little and suddenly she's quite interested in her food. "No... not especially silly." They've been good dreams, but not the kind she wants Daniel to know about.
dr_schreber: wibbledr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 05:52 pm (UTC)
Schreber will pretty much wear what she asks him to. ;)
He's afraid to do anything to her but she's so interested and he has visions of her learning about his work and becoming a part of it and they'd be partners in it. Schreber hasn't had anyone he could really talk to about his work except his alternate. It would be so wonderful to have her be a part of this. She'd be good at it, she has more medical knowledge then he does.
"If... if you really want to know what it's like... and learn..." He fidgets with a fork.
Sarah Branigan: happysarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 06:01 pm (UTC)
If she knew what he was thinking, she'd be even more eager to help. As it is, she just wants him to feel more comfortable with his research, to maybe make amends with his past.

She smiles. "I would like to learn. This technology was used for awful things, but it can be used for a lot of good, too."
dr_schreber: the good doctor w/needledr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 06:10 pm (UTC)
Someday maybe Schreber will learn to actually share what he's thinking. "It's... easier on someone who's had it done before. There's a hole there in the bone you can... find if you've done it before-you don't... want to hear about this while you're eating, do you?" He takes a mouthful of pasta salad to make himself be quiet.
Sarah Branigan: oh pleasesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 06:17 pm (UTC)
She chuckles and helps herself to some fruit. "It's not as bad as the time I had to help a patient with an infected incision site right after having a vanilla pudding snack." Still, there's a bit of bravado in her words. "Can you find it on me? With your fingers?" she asks.
dr_schreber: the good doctor w/needledr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 06:27 pm (UTC)
He shudders and smiles a little but maybe she shouldn't have told him that while he was eating. Schreber is not a nurse. He swallows a little hard and reaches over. It only takes him a second or two to find it, his fingers go almost straight to the spot on her forehead. It doesn't feel any different to her because it's been so long since she's been imprinted.
Sarah Branigan: purple rosesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 06:32 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that was a little mean of her. Nurses need to have iron stomachs, even more so than doctors.

She reaches up, overlapping his own hand as she tries to feel for herself. "It doesn't feel any different," she notes. "Can I feel yours?" There's a quick and sheepish grin that follows. No, she didn't mean it like that.
dr_schreber: Betrayed my kinddr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 06:39 pm (UTC)
Schreber knows this and never ever wants to be a medical doctor. Stitching up Dr. Crane's arm that one time was bad enough.
He takes her fingers gently and puts them on the spot, pressing them in place. "It's there. Trust me." She might maybe feel it, if her fingers are very sensitive. He blushes a little and then takes her fingers and puts them on the spot on his forehead. She's more likely to feel it there because he's had a syringe in his head more then most people. He can't hit exactly the same spot every time so the hole there is a little bigger. It's not enough to be a weakspot in the skull to worry about, but it's there. He found the spot on himself easier from experience.
