Second home ((Open!))
Schreber has been puttering for about a week, pinpointing back and forth from home and setting up his lab again. It's been pretty much empty since his heart attack and that was a while ago. He's visited once or twice to show Sarah around but now he's moving things in and setting up his room again. There's another beat up couch (Not the same one, that's at the beach house), and his lockbox with the brainjuice samples, and the computer is up and running. There's also a box with a lamp that's supposed to simulate real sunlight and a little wire rack like you're supposed to put in a patio for flowerpots. Schreber is still puttering because he's not really sure where to get started but the door is open (that makes him a little jumpy) and there's a sign taped to the door with his name on it again. The old one got swept away in the flood.
Orwell is on the arm of the new couch, pulling at threads and watching the door anxiously for visitors but the lab seems very quiet these days.

Current Mood: busy

dr_schreber: *science!*dr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 03:46 pm (UTC)
He nods and moves aside a little. "You'll have to adjust it a lot, I usually look without my glasses." That means it'll be really out of focus for anyone else. Schreber does not have good eyesight. "It was redundant. I knew whoever I gave the distillation to would al...ready have that knowledge, or should. There... were some of the Stranger's memories in it too." He glances at two vials that have very dark oil-slick black contents. They're tightly capped.
If she can actually get the microscope focused, what she sees won't make a lot of sense. She's looking at chemical components and colors and it doesn't look quite like anything she's seen before even in her memories of medical training.
Sarah Branigan: furtivesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 03:55 pm (UTC)
She listens while she peers into the microscope, blinking hopelessly at the blurriness before adjusting the focus. Eventually she sees what she thinks she's supposed to be seeing, even though it doesn't make any sense to her. "It's beautiful..." she says quietly.

She looks up sharply when he mentions the Strangers, then over at the vials. It's easy to tell which vials contain Their memories.
dr_schreber: contemplative syringedr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 04:06 pm (UTC)
He's looking over the vials now, refreshing his memory of what he has. "I imprinted Nadezhda with it, in the end. I think it... was useful." He peers at the labels and shifts them around a little, reorganizing. He looks a little guilty and thoughtful as he comes across a sample he took while he was on hydegas.
Sarah Branigan: soft happysarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 04:13 pm (UTC)
"Really? I would have thought she'd already have plenty of medical knowledge." Her attention is back on him and the vials. "I know you're working on your sleep serum, but that's another good use for this technology -- a way to pass on knowledge."
dr_schreber: the good doctor w/needledr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 04:24 pm (UTC)
"She does, but it wasn't enough. There was... a very serious disease was running through Arkham and Dr. Crane happened to be in there at... the time, and caught it... a lot of people were working to find a cure and it was all I... could think to contribute. It is useful, but not many people want knowledge dropped direct...ly into their brian like that. It's not pleasant." He puts the vials down and his eyes are all distant again.
Sarah Branigan: soft happysarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 04:30 pm (UTC)
Her eyes widen a little at the backstory, but obviously things worked out. One of the reasons she isn't more wary of Crane is because so many people -- people she knows and respects -- consider him a friend.

"I would," she murmurs softly, before blushing a little. "I mean, if it would help in an emergency. I already know that my memories are false, what's a few more if-- if they don't feel like they belong to someone else. If it's just information."
dr_schreber: the good doctor w/needledr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 04:36 pm (UTC)
Dr. Crane is a dangerous friend to have but there's also a lot there to respect and admire. Not everyone can see it, especially when he's feargassing them.
"I tried to make it as impersonal as possible, but she doesn't have the other ex...perience to compare it to." He smiles weakly. "It does have practical applications but not many people would be willing. I'd... do that to myself without much hesitation, but that's different."
Sarah Branigan: purple rosesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 04:48 pm (UTC)
Involuntary feargassing can put quite a damper on potential feelings of respect and admiration.

"I suppose not," she murmurs. It also seems somewhat dishonest to spread information in such a way -- maybe it's best only for emergencies.

She returns to the table with lunch spread atop it and helps herself to some pasta salad. "I think... so long as I weren't awake, the actual method isn't so bad. It's quick, at least."
dr_schreber: contemplative syringedr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 04:56 pm (UTC)
People are funny like that.
Schreber thinks that injecting people's brains should bother him more then it does. He opens a little black case and checks the empty syringes there to make sure they're okay. They get sterilized and reused and he worries about cracks in the glass. "Experimentation always seems to be the exception to that. You have to ex...periment with things first so you can be sure it will actually work in an e...mergency situation."
Sarah Branigan: prettysarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 05:02 pm (UTC)
Sarah thinks it really ought to bother her more, too, the idea of being injected. But now that the Strangers have been taken out of the equation, and the technology could be used for something good, it doesn't seem troubling. A lot of medicine is like that -- most techniques have the potential for benefiting others (or being horribly misused).

She smiles faintly, picking at her lunch. "Maybe. You know that I'm willing to help you."
dr_schreber: Nervous smile Tod artdr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 05:11 pm (UTC)
Schreber injecting her with his syringe has all kinds of implications too. Probably he does not think about that and all the silly innuendo that goes along with it. ;P Medicine isn't a field for the squeamish though so it makes sense that she deals with the idea okay.
"...You don't want to be an experimental subject." He remembers to put his work down and eat something.
Sarah Branigan: oh pleasesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 05:23 pm (UTC)
There is no way in Hell Sarah would ever associate that with that, so any such innuendo is lost on her although she really does like him dressed in his labcoat.

She reaches over and gives him arm a squeeze. "I don't want to have you test everything on me, no, but if it's something I can use anyway..." she shrugs. "Besides, I already promised you a silly dream of mine."
dr_schreber: tired/blank lookdr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 05:30 pm (UTC)
Schreber's labcoat is hanging in the back of the closet at the beach house. Maybe she should get it cleaned and pressed to give him a hint. Mostly he works in his normal clothes, now.
"I wouldn't... I couldn't..." He watches her a little worried. "I don't like to think of using you like a laborator...y animal. But..." He laughs nervously. "Why, have you had any silly dreams recently?"
Sarah Branigan: purple rosesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 05:38 pm (UTC)
Sarah will get the labcoat clean and pressed and bring it to his lab. Strictly for the good of *science!*.

She shakes her head. "You wouldn't be using me, not if I'm volunteering." Maybe if he injects her with her permission, he'll lose a little bit of his guilt. "But... it's up to you."

His question makes her blush a little and suddenly she's quite interested in her food. "No... not especially silly." They've been good dreams, but not the kind she wants Daniel to know about.
dr_schreber: wibbledr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 05:52 pm (UTC)
Schreber will pretty much wear what she asks him to. ;)
He's afraid to do anything to her but she's so interested and he has visions of her learning about his work and becoming a part of it and they'd be partners in it. Schreber hasn't had anyone he could really talk to about his work except his alternate. It would be so wonderful to have her be a part of this. She'd be good at it, she has more medical knowledge then he does.
"If... if you really want to know what it's like... and learn..." He fidgets with a fork.
Sarah Branigan: happysarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 06:01 pm (UTC)
If she knew what he was thinking, she'd be even more eager to help. As it is, she just wants him to feel more comfortable with his research, to maybe make amends with his past.

She smiles. "I would like to learn. This technology was used for awful things, but it can be used for a lot of good, too."
dr_schreber: the good doctor w/needledr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 06:10 pm (UTC)
Someday maybe Schreber will learn to actually share what he's thinking. "It's... easier on someone who's had it done before. There's a hole there in the bone you can... find if you've done it before-you don't... want to hear about this while you're eating, do you?" He takes a mouthful of pasta salad to make himself be quiet.
Sarah Branigan: oh pleasesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 06:17 pm (UTC)
She chuckles and helps herself to some fruit. "It's not as bad as the time I had to help a patient with an infected incision site right after having a vanilla pudding snack." Still, there's a bit of bravado in her words. "Can you find it on me? With your fingers?" she asks.
dr_schreber: the good doctor w/needledr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 06:27 pm (UTC)
He shudders and smiles a little but maybe she shouldn't have told him that while he was eating. Schreber is not a nurse. He swallows a little hard and reaches over. It only takes him a second or two to find it, his fingers go almost straight to the spot on her forehead. It doesn't feel any different to her because it's been so long since she's been imprinted.
Sarah Branigan: purple rosesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 06:32 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that was a little mean of her. Nurses need to have iron stomachs, even more so than doctors.

She reaches up, overlapping his own hand as she tries to feel for herself. "It doesn't feel any different," she notes. "Can I feel yours?" There's a quick and sheepish grin that follows. No, she didn't mean it like that.
dr_schreber: Betrayed my kinddr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 06:39 pm (UTC)
Schreber knows this and never ever wants to be a medical doctor. Stitching up Dr. Crane's arm that one time was bad enough.
He takes her fingers gently and puts them on the spot, pressing them in place. "It's there. Trust me." She might maybe feel it, if her fingers are very sensitive. He blushes a little and then takes her fingers and puts them on the spot on his forehead. She's more likely to feel it there because he's had a syringe in his head more then most people. He can't hit exactly the same spot every time so the hole there is a little bigger. It's not enough to be a weakspot in the skull to worry about, but it's there. He found the spot on himself easier from experience.
Sarah Branigan: soft happysarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 06:45 pm (UTC)
She shuts her eyes, the better to use her sense of touch, and concentrates. Yes... yes. She feels it. Or thinks she does, anyway. She opens her eyes again and lets her fingers wander a bit, lightly stroking his face before withdrawing her hand. "You can't do all your experimentation on yourself, you know."
dr_schreber: the good doctor w/needledr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 06:56 pm (UTC)
"No... I can't. Sometimes the experiment makes it impossible to observe the re...sults from that side." He fidgets a little and looks sorry that she took her hand away. "Only... if you're sure. I've gotten a few volunteers through the Nexus in... the past. The feedback isn't always as... detailed as I'd like though."
Sarah Branigan: black and whitesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 07:02 pm (UTC)
She brings her hand back then and scoots closer to him for good measure. Pet pet. "I'm sure." She smirks a little at his comment. "If you're going to be recruiting volunteers again, you might want to make up a questionnaire of some sort. People tend to be vague when they don't have the vocabulary to describe what's happening to them."
dr_schreber: fascinateddr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 07:16 pm (UTC)
"I should... I'm not used to doing things that way at all. I'm a little worried putting more... requirements on my volunteers could cut down on the number even more." Petting is nice. He might forget to eat though, unless she leaves some food with him when she goes back to work. "I'd... love to have you know enough that I could bounce i...deas off you..."
Sarah Branigan: knowing smilesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 07:24 pm (UTC)
"Well, you can see how it goes. If someone's really interested in helping, they're not going to mind answering some questions."

She'll leave the basket and tupperware containers with him. He can save some of the food in his refrigerator if he has any leftover, or he can clean the tupperware since he promised to take on that chore.

"Well, then you better start teaching me," she grins. "I could come back here after work today. Or maybe this weekend we could get started?"
dr_schreber: rapt attentiondr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 07:33 pm (UTC)
"Either of those." He smiles and actually looks a little bit excited about this. "If you're tired after work it can wait for the weekend." He reaches for her hand and squeezes it. Better leave the food and let him take care of the dishes later.
Sarah Branigan: black and whitesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 07:44 pm (UTC)
"Mmm, maybe this weekend, then. I've got some lesson plans to work on." She smiles and finishes up her lunch. "I'd better get back soon," she notes, after checking her PinPoint. "Did you want me to take Clio back with me, or leave her here?"
dr_schreber: fascinateddr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 07:50 pm (UTC)
He nods and doesn't look disappointed at all because maybe tonight they'll cuddle instead. "Wherever you think she'll be happiest." He's watching Sarah with a kind of dreamy-happy expression now.
Sarah Branigan: lotsa hairsarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 07:57 pm (UTC)
She's not sure what he's thinking about, but she really likes the way he's looking at her. She glances over at Clio who seems to be having a fun time following Orwell around. "Email me if she becomes a nuisance." She kisses Daniel goodbye, first on the lips, then on his forehead for good measure. "See you tonight," she murmurs before PinPointing out.
dr_schreber: rapt attentiondr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 08:00 pm (UTC)
The animals will keep him company and he'll have to eat the food she's left or else they'll get it. He kisses back and watches her go, happily thinking about her learning all about his work.
