Second home ((Open!))
Schreber has been puttering for about a week, pinpointing back and forth from home and setting up his lab again. It's been pretty much empty since his heart attack and that was a while ago. He's visited once or twice to show Sarah around but now he's moving things in and setting up his room again. There's another beat up couch (Not the same one, that's at the beach house), and his lockbox with the brainjuice samples, and the computer is up and running. There's also a box with a lamp that's supposed to simulate real sunlight and a little wire rack like you're supposed to put in a patio for flowerpots. Schreber is still puttering because he's not really sure where to get started but the door is open (that makes him a little jumpy) and there's a sign taped to the door with his name on it again. The old one got swept away in the flood.
Orwell is on the arm of the new couch, pulling at threads and watching the door anxiously for visitors but the lab seems very quiet these days.

Current Mood: busy

Because only Sarah tells them that. Schreber just tells them to behave and not scratch anything up, but lets them go anywhere they want.
"I'd like to. I wonder if the overhead lights could be re...placed...?" He cranes his neck to look up thoughtfully at the ugly overhead flourescent light strips set in the ceiling. Her question brings him back. "It... does, yes. Not all of them. I had some stored here that I left because I was...n't worried about losing them, but it looks like Mr. Osborn pro...tected things like that from the flood."
Sarah Branigan: soft happysarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 02:07 pm (UTC)
She walks over to the lockbox. "How many samples do you have?" She sounds curious. "Did you ever figure out how They were able to suspend memories in liquid? It just seems to go against everything I've learned about the brain."
dr_schreber: *science!*dr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 02:34 pm (UTC)
Schreber shuts the door and locks it quietly. It's not meant to be menacing but he doesn't like the idea of just anybody being able to walk in if he gets the samples out. "I don't know. The formula is in here..." He taps his own head. "But even knowing how to put the components together it de...fies explanation. I know more than anyone else about it and it's still not enough." He sighs and comes over and unlocks the storage box. It's one of those very heavy fire and flood proof kinds. "How many depends how you count them. A lot of them are just... fragments."
Sarah Branigan: purple rosesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 02:41 pm (UTC)
Sarah doesn't interpret it as menacing at all. She understands the need for privacy. She peers at the vials once he opens the box -- lots of little memories, just waiting to be placed into someone's head. "Fragments? Just a single memory, then, or--" she grasps for the words to describe what she wants to say. "I remember, in the movie, you were adding a little bit from different vials..."
dr_schreber: *science!*dr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 02:48 pm (UTC)
Also Sarah has a pinpoint. Or maybe she'd like to be trapped somewhere with Schreber. He pulls out the little metal rack that the vials hang in. They have little labels in his cramped handwriting that she might be able to read now just from seeing it around. "Less then a lifetime, anyway. I... a long time ago I collected whatever wasn't de...stroyed. A lot of what I found wasn't viable." He puts the rack on the table.
Orwell looks up from playing with Clio and cocks his head a little. He hasn't heard that familiar glass and metal clink for a while.
Sarah Branigan: purple rosesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 02:59 pm (UTC)
Sarah is not thinking about what she'd like to do in a locked room with Daniel (maybe she'll daydream about that later). Right now, her attention is on the vials. She catches a word or two of writing on the labels -- his writing is never easy to read except up-close. "Some of this is from before? But no way of knowing who they came from..."
dr_schreber: *science!*dr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 03:17 pm (UTC)
Only Schreber can read his handwriting well. He knows this and is very happy to have a computer to type on so other people can read what he writes. He nods a little and pulls over one of the big complex microscopes which was also salvaged from the original labs in the city. "The last time I went in looking for anything I was looking for medical knowledge. There's... bits and pieces of that. I used a lot of it distilled togeth...er in one syringe, but some seemed extraneous. Basic first aid." He looks over the syringes until he finds one that doesn't have much in it, and he slots this into the holder on the microscope. "It's... hard to look at I think, un...less you have a good idea what you're looking at."
Sarah Branigansarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 03:26 pm (UTC)
The equippment is familiar, from what she saw in the movie, but she finds it fascinating nonetheless. She laughs softly. "I wouldn't call basic first aid extraneous... but it's probably redundant, after a certain point." She moves closer to the microscope. "Can... can I look?"
dr_schreber: *science!*dr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 03:46 pm (UTC)
He nods and moves aside a little. "You'll have to adjust it a lot, I usually look without my glasses." That means it'll be really out of focus for anyone else. Schreber does not have good eyesight. "It was redundant. I knew whoever I gave the distillation to would al...ready have that knowledge, or should. There... were some of the Stranger's memories in it too." He glances at two vials that have very dark oil-slick black contents. They're tightly capped.
If she can actually get the microscope focused, what she sees won't make a lot of sense. She's looking at chemical components and colors and it doesn't look quite like anything she's seen before even in her memories of medical training.
Sarah Branigan: furtivesarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 03:55 pm (UTC)
She listens while she peers into the microscope, blinking hopelessly at the blurriness before adjusting the focus. Eventually she sees what she thinks she's supposed to be seeing, even though it doesn't make any sense to her. "It's beautiful..." she says quietly.

She looks up sharply when he mentions the Strangers, then over at the vials. It's easy to tell which vials contain Their memories.
dr_schreber: contemplative syringedr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 04:06 pm (UTC)
He's looking over the vials now, refreshing his memory of what he has. "I imprinted Nadezhda with it, in the end. I think it... was useful." He peers at the labels and shifts them around a little, reorganizing. He looks a little guilty and thoughtful as he comes across a sample he took while he was on hydegas.
Sarah Branigan: soft happysarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 04:13 pm (UTC)
"Really? I would have thought she'd already have plenty of medical knowledge." Her attention is back on him and the vials. "I know you're working on your sleep serum, but that's another good use for this technology -- a way to pass on knowledge."
dr_schreber: the good doctor w/needledr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 04:24 pm (UTC)
"She does, but it wasn't enough. There was... a very serious disease was running through Arkham and Dr. Crane happened to be in there at... the time, and caught it... a lot of people were working to find a cure and it was all I... could think to contribute. It is useful, but not many people want knowledge dropped direct...ly into their brian like that. It's not pleasant." He puts the vials down and his eyes are all distant again.
Sarah Branigan: soft happysarah_branigan on April 3rd, 2007 04:30 pm (UTC)
Her eyes widen a little at the backstory, but obviously things worked out. One of the reasons she isn't more wary of Crane is because so many people -- people she knows and respects -- consider him a friend.

"I would," she murmurs softly, before blushing a little. "I mean, if it would help in an emergency. I already know that my memories are false, what's a few more if-- if they don't feel like they belong to someone else. If it's just information."
dr_schreber: the good doctor w/needledr_schreber on April 3rd, 2007 04:36 pm (UTC)
Dr. Crane is a dangerous friend to have but there's also a lot there to respect and admire. Not everyone can see it, especially when he's feargassing them.
"I tried to make it as impersonal as possible, but she doesn't have the other ex...perience to compare it to." He smiles weakly. "It does have practical applications but not many people would be willing. I'd... do that to myself without much hesitation, but that's different."
